After rain all week the 34th Knowle Fun Run was run in fine ideal running conditions last Sunday, when runners from all over the country decided whether to run 5k or 10k. With the extended course every runner could claim to record a personal best.
It’s great to see many local and previous winners back amongst the Provisional winners this year
Dame Caroline Spelman sent the runners on their way on the dot of midday encouraging all the runners as they passed the start line. As Caroline said “Enjoy your Run today, you cannot all be winners but you are all helping the Lions raise over £35,000 for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, Prostate Cancer UK, Motor Neurone Disease Association and other local Lions causes, so everyone’s a winner.”
Caroline chose the Tilehouse Trotters alias ‘the Vikings’ from Knowle as the Fancy Dress winner who really looked the part wheeling their ship, and later went on to award trophies and prizes to all the winners. Greg Hart the mastermind behind the Viking Ship who has been refining its construction each year for many years, assured us they would be invading again next year.
“We were delighted to have nearly 1750 entries for this year’s Fun Run & KIDSruns”, said Fun Run lead Lion Bob Thurtle. “The Lions were grateful for the continued sponsorship from many companies who helped cover the costs of staging the event. We really appreciate how lucky we are to have the support of a long list of local companies, especially lead sponsor Hunters Estate Agents. This enables us to tell runners that every £ of entry fee, donation or sponsorship raised will go to our nominated charities. We hope to have raised over £35,000 when all the runners sponsorship has been received. As usual many runners raised funds for their own favourite charities and we shall never know how many thousands of pounds to add to that we receive, unless they tell us.”
The day started well when around 250 under 9 year olds took part in 4 KIDSruns wearing their complimentary royal blue Fun Run t-shirts were cheered around the Arden school fields all keen to pick up their Aldi chocolate bar and certificate of achievement. The KIDSrun winners all received trophies & gifts courtesy of KIDSrun sponsor Listers JLR
“It’s great to be part of a team organising such a popular and successful community event,” said organiser Bob. Anyone who may like to help the Lions with this or their other fundraising activities please get in touch now via firstname.lastname@example.org
