Knowle and Dorridge Lions Club celebrated yet another successful year last month, when the club held its annual presentation evening for sponsors at the Greswolde Hotel in Knowle.
‘The weather, the Olympics & the recession all made it a particularly difficult year for charity fundraisers’ said Lions Past President Dave Carter. ‘Our year started with our Festive Walk after Christmas from Baddesley Clinton House and we were delighted when a record 1700 walkers donated over £11,000 for our nominated charities Alzheimer’s Society, Crossroads Care, Knowle and Dorridge Scouts and other local causes. Our big fundraiser, the Knowle Fun Run had fewer runners this year but still netted nearly £40,000 for charity with superb support from sponsors and advertisers alike.
Dave then presented cheques for monies raise at the Heart of England Walk & Bike Ride ‘This newly named event for new charities and at a new venue Baddesley Clinton proved a great attraction in July raising over £15,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, the British Heart Foundation and local causes.’
Dave announced that the club had raised over £77,000 in total for charity over the past 12 months and thanked all the sponsors saying, ‘It’s great for our club of 35 volunteer Lions to celebrate such success again, but without the help from companies like yourselves our events would never realise so much for charity.’
He went on to present cheques totalling over £34,000 to their 3 nominated charities – Alzheimer’s Society, Crossroads Care, Knowle and Dorridge Scouts.
Community Service Chairman Barry Dale explained that the Club retain usually 30% of all the funds they raise for locally determined causes and once again it had spent all the monies it had raised the previous year, having responded to requests for funding from many local organisations, and had successfully organised coach outings and tea parties for older people and provided travel bursaries for local youths.
He then went on to introduce the charities the Lions are nominating as beneficiaries for the coming 20th Festive Walk on Sunday 30 December and 30th Knowle Fun Run on Sunday 12 May 2013 – Marie Curie Big Build, St Basil’s and AgeUK Solihull
