For something over an hour the 25th Knowle Fun Run will disrupt the traffic in and around Knowle on Sunday 11 May. “For 25 years our community has benefitted from the Fun Run and this year is no exception,” says Lions President John Heard. “We are proud to say that in all that time our safety record is exemplary. However, following numerous discussions with the Police and Council advisers they have insisted that to protect runners we stop runners & traffic sharing the roads at the same time during the event.”
This means that the Council has approved road closures for all the roads used as part of the 2.5 mile course. It is the first time that the Lions have had to take full responsibility for the safety of the runners, with the road closures and traffic management no longer being handled by the Council contractors and the Police.
“We have always worked in very close conjunction with the Police and will be guided by their recommendation”, says Fun Run organiser Dave Carter. “It means that for the first time on Fun Run day all traffic entering Knowle, from all directions, will be subject to a diversion as all roads used as the course will be closed to all traffic and access to the centre of the village will be prohibited for upto 2 hours from midday on Sunday 11 May. We assure everyone these will be kept to an absolute minimum and cleared as soon as possible.”
The Lions have notified Knowle residents, each home receiving a letter explaining the arrangements which may mean some inconvenience to some residents wishing to drive out of their estates, apologising in advance and begging their understanding. As the letter says: Please remember this is only once a year. It is a superb community event, which involves the whole village, including all the schools and many clubs, raising over £35k for local and national charities. Thank you again for your patience and understanding.
